Boursot Père et Fils

The Boursots have grown wine in Chambolle-Musigny since at least 1550, when a Guillaume Boursot is recorded there as a vigneron. For most of that time the crop went to the trade. Jean Boursot began bottling at the estate in 1974 and opened the first tasting cellar in the village; Rémy Boursot took over four hectares in 1984; and in 1993 the family added a small négociant house, Maison Boursot Père et Fils, so that it could buy grapes and widen the range. Rémy's twin sons run it today: Romaric on the commercial side since 2011, Romuald in the vines and the cellar since 2012. The four hectares of family vines are supplemented by roughly a hectare and a half of bought-in fruit, vinified in the same cellar.

There are no grands crus here, but three premiers crus of Chambolle-Musigny. Les Fuées is the largest holding, high on the slope at the Morey-Saint-Denis end of the village and immediately below Bonnes-Mares, with some vines around seventy-five years old; Arcana Cabinet lists it as a Vieille Vigne bottling. Les Chatelots and Les Lavrottes lie mid-slope, closer to the middle of the commune, the second of them a very small climat. Below them come the village Chambolle-Musigny, drawn from the Nazoires and Clos les Echezeaux parcels, and a Côte de Nuits-Villages from La Montagne at Corgoloin, at the southern end of that appellation.

The family has farmed its own vines organically since 2003 by its own account, but holds no organic certification and makes no claim on the label; bought-in grapes come from growers it selects for working the same way. Winemaking is traditional: whole-bunch destemming, four to five days of cool maceration, about three weeks of vatting in all, then fourteen to sixteen months in barrel with thirty to fifty per cent new oak. Part of the Côte de Nuits-Villages has been raised in amphora. The wines are vivid and forward in shape, with the red fruit and floral lift of Chambolle rather than density. Arcana Cabinet lists five wines from the estate: the Chambolle-Musigny premiers crus Les Fuées Vieille Vigne, Les Châtelots and Les Lavrottes, the village Chambolle-Musigny and the Côte de Nuits-Villages. The range also includes Bourgogne in both colours and, from the négociant side, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Vosne-Romanée.
