Quinta do Bom Retiro is one of the founding estates of Casa Ramos Pinto, established in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto and acquired by Champagne house Louis Roederer in 1990, and this 20-year-old Tawny is a single-quinta bottling from that historic Douro property. Aged for around two decades in wood, the wine develops the deep amber-gold hue, nutty complexity and notes of dried fig, caramel and gentle spice that define fine aged Tawny Port, while retaining freshness and balance rather than becoming overly heavy. As a single-quinta expression rather than a house blend, it offers a more specific sense of place tied to the Bom Retiro estate in the Alto Corgo. Serve lightly chilled with roasted nuts, aged cheese or a not-too-sweet dessert such as almond tart.

Should this Port be decanted?

No. It was matured oxidatively in cask for two decades and bottled bright, so there is no deposit to leave behind and nothing to gain from aeration: pull the cork and pour.

How long can this Port be cellared?

It will not improve further in bottle, since the ageing was done in wood, so there is nothing to wait for: drink it at your leisure. Its great advantage is that, once opened, it keeps for several weeks recorked in the fridge without losing its character.

What food pairs well with this Port?

Serve it lightly chilled, at 12-16 °C, with walnuts and almonds, dried fruit, crème brûlée, apple tart or an aged hard cheese. At twenty years it has the depth to take on dark chocolate as well.
