Burmester, a Porto house founded in 1730 and based in Vila Nova de Gaia since 1750, has historically focused on markets with a strong taste for aged tawny styles, and this 20-year-old Tawny reflects that specialization. Made from a blend of traditional Douro red grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz aged in wood for an average of two decades, this non-vintage Tawny takes on a golden-amber color and develops the caramel, dried fruit, nut and gentle spice notes that long barrel ageing brings. Smooth and complex, it is more refined and softer in tannin than a Ruby or Vintage style Port, making it an approachable after-dinner wine. Serve slightly chilled alongside nuts, dried fruit, crème brûlée or a strong blue cheese for a classic pairing.

Should this Port be decanted?

No. It was matured oxidatively in cask for two decades and bottled bright, so there is no deposit to leave behind and nothing to gain from aeration: pull the cork and pour.

How long can this Port be cellared?

It will not improve further in bottle, since the ageing was done in wood, so there is nothing to wait for: drink it at your leisure. Its great advantage is that, once opened, it keeps for several weeks recorked in the fridge without losing its character.

What food pairs well with this Port?

Serve it lightly chilled, at 12-16 °C, with walnuts and almonds, dried fruit, crème brûlée, apple tart or an aged hard cheese. At twenty years it has the depth to take on dark chocolate as well.
