Robert Groffier

Domaine Robert Groffier Père & Fils cellars its wines in the centre of Morey-Saint-Denis, next door to the Clos de Tart, yet owns almost no Morey vineyard: the holdings are in Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. The domaine's own account traces the family's first vines here to Frédéric Groffier in the nineteenth century; Jules Groffier assembled most of the main parcels in the 1950s, and Robert Groffier gave the domaine the name it still carries. Nicolas Groffier, Robert's grandson, has run it since joining his father Serge in the mid-2000s. It amounts to about eight hectares.

Arcana Cabinet lists two grands crus: Chambertin Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin, and Bonnes-Mares, a parcel of just under a hectare in that cru, which straddles Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. The heart of the domaine is Chambolle-Musigny. Groffier is the largest owner of the premier cru Les Amoureuses, holding about a hectare of the climat's five and a half, and since the 2022 vintage has bottled it as two wines, La Grâce des Argiles from the red clay and La Délicatesse des Sables from the sandier ground, both listed here. Alongside them are the premiers crus Les Hauts-Doix, which adjoins Les Amoureuses, and Les Sentiers, which lies downslope of Bonnes-Mares toward the Morey-Saint-Denis boundary. At the foot of the range sits a Bourgogne Passetoutgrains, Pinot Noir blended with Gamay. The range also includes a Bourgogne Côte d'Or and a Gevrey-Chambertin village wine from the lieu-dit Les Seuvrées.

The domaine describes working the soils in place of herbicide, with yields held down by hand debudding; it holds no organic or biodynamic certification. Whole clusters go in according to the vintage and the cuvée, up to the whole crop for Clos de Bèze, and the proportion of new oak varies widely between cuvées, from very little at the foot of the range to a high proportion for Clos de Bèze. The wines show perfume and fine-grained tannin. Arcana Cabinet lists seven wines from the domaine: the two grands crus, four Chambolle-Musigny premiers crus and the Passetoutgrains.
