Hudelot-Noëllat

Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is based in Chambolle-Musigny, in the Côte de Nuits. Alain Hudelot founded it in 1962 with parcels given him by his father; his marriage to Odile Noëllat, granddaughter of Charles Noëllat of Vosne-Romanée, brought the Vosne holdings into the estate. Their grandson Charles van Canneyt has made the wines since 2008. Ten hectares across four villages include Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg, a pairing held by only a small number of domaines, among them Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leroy. It is a separate estate from Domaine Michel Noëllat, also of Vosne-Romanée.

Arcana Cabinet lists the Romanée-Saint-Vivant and the Clos de Vougeot, the latter inside the walls a few steps from the cellar door. The Premiers Crus follow: in Vosne-Romanée, Les Suchots, which adjoins Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Échézeaux, and Les Beaumonts, higher up the slope on the Flagey side; then Vougeot Les Petits Vougeots, immediately outside the walls of the Clos, and Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Murgers, at the northern end of that commune where it borders Vosne. Village Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny are also listed. The range also includes the Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Malconsorts, the Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes, a village Nuits-Saint-Georges from Les Bas de Combes, and Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Aligoté and Passetoutgrains.

Yields are kept low and the vineyards ploughed; the domaine holds no organic or biodynamic certification. Fermentation is with native yeasts and a proportion of whole bunches, and the domaine's technical sheets give about sixteen months in barrel, with around 20% new oak at village level and up to 50% for the Grands Crus. The style is classical and restrained: red and dark cherry, violet and spice over a silky texture, closed young and more open after five or six years. Arcana Cabinet lists eight wines from the domaine: two Grands Crus, four Premiers Crus and two village wines.
