White Pernand-Vergelesses, village and premier cru: Chardonnay from the village tucked behind the hill of Corton.
Pernand-Vergelesses is a Côte de Beaune village set on the hill of Corton, part of whose slope carries the Corton and Corton-Charlemagne appellations. The village's own whites come from the same hill and the slopes behind it, and they share something of Corton-Charlemagne's firm, mineral style at a fraction of its price: citrus, white flowers, a chalky line and fresh acidity.
Les Belles Filles is a village-level climat of Pernand-Vergelesses, bottled here by two different producers. Les Combottes is another village lieu-dit. Le Clos du Village is a premier cru, farmed by Domaine Rapet. A plain village Pernand blanc completes the range.
Taste Les Belles Filles from two producers to see how much the hand of the grower matters on one site. Our cellar notes give 3 to 10 years for these wines, the premier cru a little longer. Serve between 12 and 14 °C. They suit shellfish, grilled fish, poultry, snails and goat cheese.
Domaine Bruno Clair acquired vineyards in Pernand in 1993, at the same time as its Corton-Charlemagne, to complement its Côte de Nuits holdings at Marsannay-la-Côte. Domaine Rapet Père & Fils, founded in 1765 and now led by Vincent and Robin Rapet, farms its village and premier cru parcels with a light-touch, minimal-extraction approach. Pascal Clément, who launched his own micro-négociant venture in 2012 focused on village-level Burgundy, makes Les Belles Filles. Maison Hugues Pavelot, the négociant house founded by Hugues Pavelot in 2014, separate from the family domaine in Savigny-lès-Beaune, makes it too.
