Red Saint-Aubin premiers crus: Pinot Noir from a Côte de Beaune village better known for its whites.
Saint-Aubin lies in the hills behind Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. It is known above all for its chalky, precise whites, but a few growers keep Pinot Noir in its premiers crus, and these reds are less often seen.
Sur le Sentier du Clou is a premier cru on the slope above the village. Derrière chez Édouard lies behind the village. Les Castets is another premier cru of the commune. All three are on limestone, which gives the reds a mineral, stony edge.
Red Saint-Aubin shows bright red fruit, a mineral edge and moderate tannin. It is lighter and fresher than the reds of Santenay to the south, and approachable earlier than many of its Côte de Beaune neighbours. Old-vine cuvées add concentration and dark cherry fruit.
Our cellar notes give 5 to 12 years for these premiers crus. Serve at 16 to 18 °C. They suit roast duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, roast poultry and soft cheeses.
Françoise et Denis Clair, a family estate created in 1986 and run day to day by Jean-Baptiste Clair, farms fourteen hectares across Santenay and Saint-Aubin; we hold its red Sur le Sentier du Clou. Hubert et Olivier Lamy, run by Olivier Lamy with the same low-intervention approach for its small red production as for its whites, makes Derrière chez Édouard Vieilles Vignes. Lamy-Pillot, the Chassagne-Montrachet estate founded in 1973 by René Lamy and Thérèse Pillot, makes Les Castets.
The whites of Saint-Aubin are in our white Saint-Aubin collection.
