Craigellachie distillery, built in 1891 by Peter Mackie at the center of Speyside near the village of the same name, sends the vast majority of its production to Dewar's for blending, making standalone single malt bottlings like this 13 Year Old relatively rare finds. The whisky's distinctive meaty, slightly sulphurous character comes from the distillery's continued use of traditional worm tub condensers, an old-fashioned technique that adds weight and depth to the spirit compared to more common modern condensers. Matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, this bottling shows tropical fruit, notably ripe banana, alongside a firm backbone of oak and gentle smoke. Bottled at a robust 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and of natural colour, it is best enjoyed neat or with a single drop of water to open up its aromatics.
