Vintage2020
Grünlack denotes a Spätlese, or late-harvest, style within Schloss Johannisberg's historic colored Lack seal system, established in 1820 by Prince Metternich to distinguish the estate's Rieslings by ripeness and residual sweetness. Grown on the estate's Rhine-facing slopes, home to Riesling vines first planted in 1720, this 2020 Spätlese is picked later than the Trocken bottlings, resulting in a lower alcohol level of just 8% and a noticeably off-dry, fruit-forward style with ripe peach, apricot and honeyed citrus balanced by the variety's signature racy acidity. This is a classic, versatile Riesling style well suited to spicy Asian cuisine, foie gras or simply enjoyed on its own as an aperitif. A lovely, lower-alcohol expression of Rheingau Riesling from one of Germany's most historic wine estates.
