Understanding Chambolle-Musigny: from Les Amoureuses to the Village Gems

Understanding Chambolle-Musigny: from Les Amoureuses to the Village Gems

Understanding the vineyard and wines of Chambolle-Musigny.

Chambolle-Musigny is located in the Côte de Nuits, neighbouring Gevrey-Chambertin (in the north), Morey-Saint-Denis and Vougeot (in the East) and Vosne-Romanée in the South, putting the vineyards of the village in the middle of the most famous appellations of the region.

The vineyard is made of 94ha of village Chambolle-Musigny, 61ha of premier cru and 26ha of Grand cru.

Chambolle-Musigny makes some of the most ethereal, perfumed reds in all of Burgundy, silk and rose-petal over a core of real depth. The wines combine intensity and elegance and are sometimes described as the Volnay of the north (and vice versa). A drinker can expect a lighter colour and less structure in the wines from this village but the wines are particularly graceful with charming fragrance.

From the terroir level, the vineyard is more characterised by the active "calcaire" (limestone) than the "argile" (clay), with an altitude of 250 to 300m facing east.

The list of sub-appellations in Chambolle Musigny includes:
