Bruno Colin
Bruno Colin is a Chassagne-Montrachet grower who signed his first vintage under his own name in 2004, after the division of his father Michel Colin-Deléger's estate the year before. He works from Chassagne and farms about 8.75 hectares, almost all of it white-wine terroir, in Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin, Santenay and the Maranges, together with a parcel of Corton-Charlemagne on the Corton hill.
Three grands crus head the range: Corton-Charlemagne, Bâtard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet. Below them come eight Chassagne-Montrachet premiers crus, En Remilly and Les Chaumées on the upper slopes towards Puligny, then Les Chenevottes, Les Vergers, La Maltroie, Morgeot, La Boudriotte and Blanchot Dessus; two premiers crus in Puligny-Montrachet, La Truffière and Les Demoiselles; and Saint-Aubin premier cru Le Charmois. The reds run to Santenay Vieilles Vignes and Santenay premier cru Les Gravières, Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes and Chassagne premier cru La Maltroie, and Maranges premier cru La Fussière. Village Chassagne-Montrachet, the old-vine cuvée Ma Vigne de 1955 and Bourgogne in Aligoté, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sit at the base.
The vineyards are worked under lutte raisonnée, with ploughing and earthing up in place of chemical weed control; the estate holds no organic or biodynamic certification. Whites are fermented and raised on fine lees in 350 litre barrels, about fifteen per cent of them new, for twelve months, then spend three to six months in stainless steel before bottling; the reds take roughly a quarter new oak on the same rhythm. Expect ripe orchard fruit and citrus over the saline, mineral finish that Chassagne's limestone and clay give. Arcana Cabinet lists fourteen wines from the domaine: Corton-Charlemagne grand cru, the Chassagne-Montrachet premiers crus En Remilly, Les Chaumées, Les Chenevottes, Les Vergers, La Maltroie, Morgeot and La Boudriotte, Puligny-Montrachet premier cru La Truffière, Saint-Aubin premier cru Le Charmois, village Chassagne-Montrachet in white and Vieilles Vignes in red, and Santenay premier cru Les Gravières with Santenay Vieilles Vignes in red. The range also includes Bâtard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet, Chassagne premier cru Blanchot Dessus, Puligny premier cru Les Demoiselles, Maranges premier cru La Fussière, the cuvée Ma Vigne de 1955 and the Bourgogne bottlings.
