Georges Joillot

Domaine Georges Joillot is based at Pommard, in the Côte de Beaune. The estate was founded in 1929 by Robert Joillot, a vigneron and plant nurseryman, and passed to his son Georges Joillot, who died in 1971. Georges's son Jean-Luc Joillot took over in the early 1980s alongside his mother Simone and ran the property for close to forty years as Domaine Jean-Luc Joillot. From the 2019 vintage the name was changed to Domaine Georges Joillot in memory of Jean-Luc's father. It is the same estate under a new name, not a separate house.

The fourth generation has run the domaine since 2019: Jeanne Joillot, her husband Grégoire Guidot, and Simon Goutard, who has been responsible for the vinifications since 2015. The estate covers around 14 hectares divided into some 60 parcels, with the largest share in Pommard. The Pommard holdings include the premiers crus Les Charmots (0.37 ha) and Les Épenots (0.36 ha), the village lieu-dit Les Noizons and a village Vieilles Vignes. The domaine also works parcels in Beaune and Volnay, and bottles Bourgogne Côte d'Or, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Bourgogne Aligoté and a Crémant de Bourgogne.

The vines are farmed under lutte raisonnée, with grass cover managed by working the soil and with debudding, trellising and leaf removal done by hand. Grapes are picked by hand, fully destemmed and fermented in concrete vats of 30 to 50 hectolitres; pigeage and remontage are used only where daily tasting indicates, and vatting runs about two weeks, extending to 15 to 20 days for the premiers crus. Ageing lasts 12 to 14 months in barrel, of which 20 to 30 per cent are new, and bottling takes place in winter without filtration. Arcana Cabinet lists four Pommard bottlings, the Beaune premier cru Hommage à Georges Popille and the Bourgogne Aligoté.
