Domaine Tortochot
Domaine Tortochot is a family estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits. It was founded in the nineteenth century by Paul Tortochot, a market gardener who bought vineyard land after the phylloxera crisis, and it has passed down four generations. Chantal Michel-Tortochot took over from her father Gabriel in 1997 and runs the domaine today. The estate covers about 12 hectares, planted to Pinot Noir.
Holdings range from village level to grand cru. The domaine owns parcels in four grands crus: Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Mazis-Chambertin in Gevrey-Chambertin, and Clos de Vougeot in the commune of Vougeot. Its premiers crus are Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Les Champeaux and Petite Chapelle, Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Charmes and Renaissance, and Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers. Village wines come from Gevrey-Chambertin, including the lieux-dits Les Corvées, Les Jeunes Rois and Champerrier, and from Morey-Saint-Denis.
The whole estate has been farmed on organic principles since 2008, working the soils by ploughing, using temporary grass cover and composted organic matter in place of chemical treatments, and the vineyards are certified organic. The wines are red, from Pinot Noir, with aromas of dark cherry and violet over a firm tannic structure. Arcana Cabinet lists eight wines from the estate, part of its range: the grands crus Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot, the Gevrey-Chambertin premiers crus Lavaux Saint-Jacques and Les Champeaux, and the village lieux-dits Les Corvées and Les Jeunes Rois.
