Compass Box is a London-based whisky blending house founded in 2000 by John Glaser, known for treating blending as a craft in its own right rather than simply a means of standardizing flavor, and for its transparency about the whiskies used in each release. Oak Cross is a blended malt Scotch whisky, combining single malts from across Scotland and finishing them using a distinctive technique involving specially cut, cross-shaped oak staves inserted into the casks, which increases the wood's surface contact with the spirit and adds structure and spice. Expect notes of vanilla, toasted oak, honey and a gentle spiciness, with a smooth, approachable character that has made this one of Compass Box's most popular expressions. It is excellent neat, on the rocks or in a whisky highball, and offers an accessible introduction to Compass Box's inventive, craft-driven approach to Scotch blending.
