"Bergerie de l'Hortus" is the entry-level red from Domaine de l'Hortus, made under the Pic Saint Loup appellation in the Languedoc, on limestone slopes beneath the Hortus massif north of Montpellier. Founded by Jean Orliac in the late 1970s, the estate is one of Pic Saint Loup's benchmark producers, and this cuvée is a blend led by Syrah and Grenache with a portion of Mourvèdre, in keeping with the appellation's rules. At 13.5% alcohol, expect a well-structured, garrigue-scented red with dark berry fruit, black pepper and a firm but approachable tannic frame. Pic Saint Loup, one of the Languedoc's coolest and most prestigious terroirs, produces some of the region's most age-worthy reds. Serve with grilled lamb, roast game or hearty Mediterranean stews.
