Red wines from the Jura: Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir from the Côtes du Jura and Arbois.
The Jura lies east of Burgundy, across the Saône plain, on marl and limestone hills facing west. Its reds come from three grapes. Poulsard is the region's pale native variety, translucent in the glass, with red berry, wild strawberry and a light peppery note, and low alcohol. Trousseau, the other native, is deeper in colour and more structured, with dark red fruit, pepper and firmer tannin. Pinot Noir gives lighter, more delicate wines than in Burgundy, with bright red fruit and a subtle earthiness.
Bénédicte and Stéphane Tissot run Domaine André et Mireille Tissot at Montigny-lès-Arsures, within the Arbois appellation; the vineyards have been certified organic since 1999 and biodynamic by Demeter since 2004. We hold their Trousseau raised in amphora, the Pinot Noir En Barberon, and DD, an Arbois red blending Trousseau, Poulsard and Pinot Noir, in magnum. Domaine des Marnes Blanches, founded in 2006 by Pauline and Géraud Fromont in the Sud-Revermont, works its marl and limestone parcels by hand and ferments on wild yeasts; we hold its Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir.
For the lightest, most aromatic style, choose Poulsard and serve it cool, closer to rosé temperature. For more grip, choose Trousseau. Pinot Noir sits between the two. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, Poulsard a little cooler. They suit charcuterie, roast poultry, salmon, mushroom dishes and Comté, the cheese of the same hills.
Most Jura reds are approachable young and keep for several years; Trousseau and the amphora wines hold the longest.
Jura whites, including ouillé Chardonnay and Savagnin, are in our white Jura collection.
