Marc Morey
Domaine Marc Morey was founded in Chassagne-Montrachet in 1919 by Ferdinand Morey and has passed through four generations since. Sabine Mollard, Marc Morey's granddaughter, has led it since 2008, with her parents Marie-Josèphe Morey and Bernard Mollard still close at hand. The estate has grown from two hectares to around nine, almost all of it white-wine terroir in Chassagne and Puligny.
Bâtard-Montrachet stands at the head of the range. In Chassagne the premiers crus climb the hillside: En Virondot, of which the domaine holds all but a fraction, high on the thin-soiled upper slope above Morgeot and Caillerets; Les Caillerets beside it; Les Vergers in the northern sector next to Les Chenevottes; and Morgeot spread across the broader, clay-heavier ground running south towards Santenay. Two Puligny premiers crus sit on either flank of that village, Les Pucelles immediately north of and contiguous with Bâtard-Montrachet, and Les Referts at the Meursault end. A village Chassagne-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Chardonnay sit beneath.
Farming is lutte raisonnée: soils ploughed and worked through the year, severe pruning and debudding to hold yields below forty hectolitres per hectare, picking by hand, and treatments only when the season calls for them. The whites spend about ten months on their lees in barrel with bâtonnage through the malolactic, then three to four months in vat before bottling, with new oak at a quarter on the village wines and a third on the premiers crus; En Virondot and Les Caillerets run up to twelve months in barrel. The wines show citrus and white orchard fruit over a firm mineral spine. Arcana Cabinet lists nine wines: Bâtard-Montrachet, the Chassagne-Montrachet premiers crus En Virondot, Les Caillerets, Les Vergers and Morgeot, the Puligny-Montrachet premiers crus Les Pucelles and Les Referts, village Chassagne-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Chardonnay. The range also includes the Chassagne premier cru Les Chenevottes, the Saint-Aubin premier cru Le Charmois, Bourgogne Aligoté, Chassagne-Montrachet in red and Rully.
