Vintage2022
"Sous le Château" is a single-vineyard Saint-Romain Chardonnay from Domaine Alain Gras, the family holding Alain Gras took over in 1979 and was the first of his line to bottle rather than sell to the négoce. As the name suggests, the vines lie beneath the ruined château of the upper village, on limestone soils that give the freshness and minerality typical of Saint-Romain whites. Saint-Romain has no premiers crus; this is a village wine from a named lieu-dit. It shows citrus, white flowers and a delicate hint of oak, with a long, chalky finish at 13% alcohol in the 2022 vintage. Serve with grilled sole, a seafood risotto, or fresh goat's cheese. Alain Gras's son Arthur now works alongside him at the domaine.
