La Cardeuse is a Premier Cru parcel within the larger Morgeot climat of Chassagne-Montrachet, planted to Pinot Noir and one of the few Chassagne Premiers Crus to make a serious red. It is farmed here by Domaine Bernard Moreau, a Chassagne-Montrachet estate that traces its roots to 1809 and is now in its sixth generation, run by Alexandre Moreau since his brother Benoît departed in 2020 to found his own label. The domaine took the name Domaine Alex Moreau from the 2021 vintage; earlier vintages, such as this 2020, carry the Bernard Moreau label. While the domaine is best known for its Chardonnay, around 30% of its 14 hectares is planted to Pinot Noir, farmed with lutte raisonnée and no herbicides for over 15 years. The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was warm and dry, with an early harvest and low yields, producing concentrated, ripe reds. It shows dark cherry, plum and a savoury, earthy character, with the fine tannins typical of Chassagne-Montrachet rouge. Pair with roast duck, game, or a rich beef daube.
