Cristal is Louis Roederer's celebrated prestige cuvée, created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who requested his personal Champagne be served in a transparent, flat-bottomed crystal bottle so its colour and effervescence could be fully appreciated. Made only in the best years from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir drawn from the house's finest, largely biodynamically farmed vineyards, Cristal has been commercially available since 1945. The 2014 Champagne vintage followed a mild, relatively kind growing season after several difficult years, producing wines of good ripeness, freshness and precision. Expect citrus, white flowers, brioche and a long, refined, mineral finish. Serve as a celebratory aperitif or alongside langoustine, caviar, or a delicate fish dish. One of the most recognised prestige cuvées in the world.
