Vintage2020
Vin Noir is a Syrah cuvée of Cornas from Domaine du Tunnel, the estate Stéphane Robert created in 1994 in Saint-Péray, in the northern Rhône. Since 2014 the cellar has been a 170-metre dressed-stone tunnel at the lieu-dit Barras, cut for the former steam line between Valence and Vernoux-en-Vivarais, which holds a steady temperature and humidity. The fruit comes from old vines on the granite hillsides of Cornas, worked by hand. The 2020 shows dark berry fruit, black pepper and a savoury, meaty edge, with firm tannins balanced by the natural acidity of the appellation. Robert prefers used barrels, which keeps oak in the background. Pair with grilled lamb chops, duck breast or aged Saint-Nectaire.
