Vintage2020
This Cornas Rouge is the village bottling of Domaine du Tunnel, created in 1994 by Stéphane Robert in Saint-Péray, in the northern Rhône. In 2014 Robert rehabilitated a 170-metre dressed-stone tunnel at the lieu-dit Barras, cut for the former steam line between Valence and Vernoux-en-Vivarais, as the estate's cellar. Made from 100% Syrah grown on the granite hillsides of Cornas, worked by hand, the 2020 shows dark fruit, black pepper and smoked meat notes, with the firm, structured tannins characteristic of the appellation. The vines are old and the barrels are used rather than new, which keeps oak in the background. Pair with grilled red meats, roast lamb or hard mountain cheeses.
