Vintage2020
This Saint-Joseph Rouge comes from Domaine du Tunnel, created in 1994 by Stéphane Robert in Saint-Péray, in the northern Rhône. The estate takes its name from its cellar: a 170-metre dressed-stone tunnel at the lieu-dit Barras, cut for the former steam line between Valence and Vernoux-en-Vivarais, which Robert rehabilitated as the working cellar in 2014. Made from 100% Syrah grown on hillside and terraced vineyards, the 2020 shows ripe dark fruit, violet aromatics and a peppery, savoury finish, with softer tannins than the estate's Cornas bottlings, in keeping with the style of Saint-Joseph. The vines are old, and work in the vineyard and the harvest are done by hand. Pair with grilled sausages, roast pork or a rustic charcuterie board.
