Sainte-Épine is a Saint-Joseph from a single parcel of very old Syrah on the steep terraces above the Rhône at Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Hervé Souhaut founded Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet in 1993 at Arlebosc, in the northern Ardèche, with his wife Béatrice. Fermentation runs on native yeast with whole bunches and a long, cool maceration, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with around 25 mg/l of sulphur. Expect dark fruit, cracked pepper and a smoked-meat note, with firm tannin and fresh acidity. It is more structured than the domaine's Vin de France Syrah and takes a short decant or a year or two in bottle. Serve with grilled or roasted red meats. Select your preferred vintage above.
