Saint-Aubin White
White Saint-Aubin, village and premier cru: chalky, precise Chardonnay from the hills behind Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.
White Saint-Aubin, village and premier cru: chalky, precise Chardonnay from the hills behind Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.
Saint-Aubin lies in a side valley behind Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, on the same band of limestone but higher up. Its whites are Chardonnay with green apple, citrus zest and a chalky, mineral finish: tauter than Chassagne, less rich than Meursault, and generally priced below both.
Saint-Aubin has a long list of premiers crus. En Remilly lies on the boundary with Chassagne-Montrachet, adjoining Le Montrachet, on thin limestone at the top of the slope. Sur le Sentier du Clou is on the slope above the village; Les Frionnes lies between the village and the hamlet of Gamay. Les Murgers des Dents de Chien, Les Combes, En Montceau and Sous Roche Dumay complete the list we hold. Village wines blend parcels across the commune.
For the clearest sense of the village, compare two premiers crus from one grower: Marc Colin's En Montceau and Sous Roche Dumay, or Françoise et Denis Clair's Les Frionnes and Sur le Sentier du Clou. Our cellar notes give 4 to 10 years for village whites and 5 to 15 years for premiers crus. Serve between 12 and 14 °C. These wines suit shellfish, grilled fish, poultry and goat cheese.
Several are based in the village itself: Marc Colin; Joseph Colin, who founded his own domaine here in 2017 after years at his father's estate; and Sylvain Langoureau. François Carillon, whose family has made wine in the area since the sixteenth century, brings Les Murgers des Dents de Chien. Philippe Colin adds Les Combes, and Françoise et Denis Clair, from Santenay, two premiers crus.
The reds of Saint-Aubin are in our red Saint-Aubin collection.
