This Morgon Côte du Py 2021 is a Beaujolais cru, not a Burgundy: it reaches the list through the négociant business that Domaine Bachey-Legros, a family estate in Santenay run by the brothers Samuel and Lénaïc, has operated alongside its own vines since 2008. Made from 100% Gamay, the Côte du Py is the best-known lieu-dit within Morgon, its blue volcanic schist, known locally as roche pourrie, giving wines of more structure and depth than is usual in the region. It shows dark cherry, kirsch and a mineral, almost smoky edge, with firmer tannins than most Beaujolais. Serve slightly cool with charcuterie, roast poultry or grilled sausages.
