Domaine Clusel-Roch's Vin de France Serine is a 100% Syrah red made from Serine, the old Côte-Rôtie strain of the grape, a low-yielding local selection. The estate propagates its own Serine by massale selection from the old vines of Les Grandes Places rather than buying commercial clones, and this cuvée comes from those younger plantings. It is bottled under the Vin de France designation rather than an appellation, which lets Guillaume Clusel, who has run the Ampuis estate since 2009, work outside the AOC rules while using the same cellar methods. Expect dark fruit, violet and peppery spice in a lighter, more immediate style than the domaine's Côte-Rôties. Serve with grilled meats, charcuterie or roasted vegetables.
