What defines a white village wine

A white village wine comes from vineyards within one commune and carries its name, sometimes with a named lieu-dit in smaller letters, such as Meursault Les Tillets or Chassagne-Montrachet Les Houillères. It shows the commune's style in Chardonnay without the price of its premiers and grands crus.

The white villages we hold

Petit Chablis and Chablis in the north, on limestone, are taut and saline. In the Côte de Beaune, Meursault is rich and textured, Puligny-Montrachet fine and floral, Chassagne-Montrachet broader; Saint-Aubin, Saint-Romain and Auxey-Duresses, in the hills behind, are fresher and more chalky, and generally priced below their neighbours. Ladoix, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Santenay add their own. Further south, Rully, Mercurey, Givry and Montagny in the Côte Chalonnaise, and Pouilly-Fuissé and Viré-Clessé in the Mâconnais, give rounder, riper Chardonnay.

How to choose and when to open

For a first comparison, set a Meursault beside a Puligny and a Chassagne from the same vintage; for value, look to Saint-Romain and Auxey-Duresses. Our cellar notes give 3 to 10 years for most village whites. Serve between 12 and 14 °C. They suit grilled and poached fish, shellfish, poultry and goat cheese.

The growers we hold

Billaud-Simon, Moreau-Naudet and Louis Michel in Chablis; Ballot-Millot, Pierre Morey, Dominique Lafon and Fabien Coche in Meursault; Bachelet-Ramonet and Jean Pascal in Puligny; the Colin family and Marc Morey in Chassagne; Alain Gras and Fabien Coche in Saint-Romain and Auxey-Duresses; Feuillat-Juillot in Montagny; Clos des Rocs in Pouilly-Fuissé.
