Vintage2002
Burmester is one of Porto's oldest houses, founded in 1730 in London before relocating operations to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750, and it specialises in Colheita ports, single-harvest wines aged for many years in wood before bottling. This Colheita from the 2002 harvest, made from a blend of traditional Douro red grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, has spent years maturing in barrel, developing the caramel, dried fruit and toasted nut character that defines the style, alongside the tawny hue that long wood ageing produces. Unlike Vintage Port, Colheita is ready to drink on release and does not require decanting from sediment. It pairs with aged cheeses or dark chocolate, or can be served on its own after dinner.

Should this Port be decanted?

No. It was matured oxidatively in cask for many years and bottled bright, so there is no deposit to leave behind and nothing to gain from aeration: pull the cork and pour.

How long can this Port be cellared?

It will not improve further in bottle, since the ageing was done in wood, so there is nothing to wait for: drink it at your leisure. Its great advantage is that, once opened, it keeps for several weeks recorked in the fridge without losing its character.

What food pairs well with this Port?

Serve it lightly chilled, at 12-16 °C, with walnuts and almonds, dried fruit, crème brûlée, apple tart or an aged hard cheese.
