Philippe Colin
Domaine Philippe Colin is based in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the Côte de Beaune. It dates from 2004, when the vineyards of Domaine Michel Colin-Deléger were divided between Philippe Colin and his brother Bruno, each of whom then set up on his own. The vines are ploughed and farmed under lutte raisonnée. The whites are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged twelve to fifteen months in French oak, with new wood generally kept to a quarter or less and a mix of 228-litre pièces and larger barrels.
The range begins with a regional Bourgogne Chardonnay. Chassagne-Montrachet is its base: the village wine in both colours, the white Premiers Crus En Remilly, Les Chaumées Clos Saint-Abdon and Les Chenevottes, and the red lieu-dit Champs de Morjot. Beyond the commune come Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Demoiselles, Meursault Premier Cru Les Cras, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Combes, a red Santenay Clos de Saint-Jean and, in the commune of Puligny-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru. The domaine bottles around two dozen wines in total, so the range also includes appellations not listed here, among them the Chassagne Premiers Crus Les Vergers and Morgeot, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Le Charmois, Santenay Premier Cru Les Gravières, Maranges and Pommard.
The whites show white flowers, ripe pear and citrus zest over a mineral, faintly saline finish. Philippe Colin is one of several Colin growers in the area: his brother Bruno Colin runs a separate domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet, and from the 2021 vintage Philippe handed a number of parcels to his son Simon, who bottles them under his own name. Philippe Colin has also owned Topiary Wine Estate in Franschhoek, South Africa, since 2014. Arcana Cabinet lists eleven wines from the domaine, from the Bourgogne Chardonnay up to Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, and also carries Bruno Colin and Simon Colin.
