Bâtard-Montrachet is a white grand cru straddling Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, and Château de la Maltroye holds a parcel there, making about two barrels a year. The estate, in Chassagne-Montrachet and run by Jean-Pierre Cornut since 1993, ferments its whites in stainless steel before moving them to barrel mid-ferment, then rests them on their fine lees. This is Chardonnay, with ripe citrus and orchard fruit over a flinty, saline core, taking on hazelnut and honey with age. Serve with lobster, langoustine or veal in cream sauce.
