Clos Saint-Jean is one of the larger premier cru climats of Chassagne-Montrachet, shared among several growers, and Château de la Maltroye, run since 1993 by Jean-Pierre Cornut, bottles this red from its own parcel within it. The wine is Pinot Noir from mid-slope limestone, carrying more concentration, spice and structure than village Chassagne while keeping the commune's mineral edge. Expect dark cherry and blackberry fruit, firm tannins and a long, savoury finish. Serve with roast game, braised short rib or a well-aged hard cheese.
