The Avril family has held land at Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1600, and the Clos des Papes name was first used for wine in 1896 and registered in 1902; in 1923 two Avrils were among the growers who, under Baron Le Roy, obtained the court rulings later written into French appellation law. Paul-Vincent Avril, who joined his father in 1988, now leads the estate, working thirty-five hectares split among no fewer than twenty-four plots across the appellation. The red is 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Counoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin and Cinsault, fully destemmed, fermented together in ceramic-lined concrete and raised twelve months in foudre with no new oak. Expect ripe red and black fruit, garrigue herbs, black pepper and firm tannin. The estate asks for an hour or two in a decanter and a glass at fourteen degrees. Pair with roast lamb, game or a hearty daube. Select your preferred vintage above.
