What defines a village wine

A village wine comes from vineyards within a single commune and carries that commune's name: Gevrey-Chambertin, Volnay, Santenay. It may be a blend of several parcels or a single named lieu-dit, printed on the label in smaller letters, such as Meursault Les Criots or Vougeot Clos du Prieuré. Village wines show the style of a commune without the price of its classified sites, and they are where most growers' house style is easiest to read.

The red villages we hold

In the Côte de Nuits: Marsannay, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and the Côte de Nuits-Villages. In the Côte de Beaune: Ladoix, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Saint-Romain, Auxey-Duresses, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay. In the Côte Chalonnaise: Rully. The northern villages are firmer and darker; those of the Côte de Beaune more supple and fragrant.

How to choose and when to open

A village red from a strong grower is often a better buy than a premier cru from a weaker one. Our cellar notes give 5 to 12 years for most of these wines, with Gevrey, Vosne and Pommard holding longer and Marsannay, Santenay and the Côte de Nuits-Villages opening sooner. Serve at 16 to 18 °C. They suit roast poultry, pork, veal, charcuterie and soft cheeses.

The growers we hold

Bruno Clair and Sylvain Pataille in Marsannay; Harmand-Geoffroy and Michel Gros in Gevrey; Denis Mortet in Fixin; Amiot-Servelle in Morey; Robert Chevillon in Nuits-Saint-Georges; Michel Gros and Michel Noëllat in Vosne; Bachelet-Ramonet, Jean-Claude Ramonet and Alex Moreau in Chassagne; Lucien Muzard and Françoise et Denis Clair in Santenay, among more than fifty domaines.
