What defines the Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits is the northern half of the Côte d'Or, a narrow east-facing slope running about twenty kilometres from Marsannay, just south of Dijon, to Corgoloin beyond Nuits-Saint-Georges. It is red-wine country: Pinot Noir on limestone and marl, with only a few white parcels. Twenty-four of Burgundy's grands crus lie here, all but one of them red.

The villages, north to south

Marsannay and Fixin open the slope with firm, direct reds. Gevrey-Chambertin follows, with its nine Chambertin grands crus and the most structured wines of the Côte. Morey-Saint-Denis sits between Gevrey's power and Chambolle-Musigny's finesse; Chambolle, with Musigny and Bonnes-Mares, gives the most fragrant reds. Vougeot is dominated by the walled Clos de Vougeot. Vosne-Romanée, with Échezeaux, Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, combines depth and perfume. Nuits-Saint-Georges, with no grand cru but a long list of premiers crus, closes the line with darker, firmer wines. Côte de Nuits-Villages covers the outlying communes at either end.

How long to keep

Our cellar notes give 5 to 12 years for most village wines, 8 to 20 years for premiers crus and 12 to 30 years for grands crus. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, after 20 to 30 minutes in a decanter when young. These reds suit roast duck, feathered game, beef and mature cheeses.

The growers we hold

Bruno Clair and Sylvain Pataille in Marsannay; Denis Mortet, Arnaud Mortet, Harmand-Geoffroy and Drouhin-Laroze in Gevrey; Amiot-Servelle in Morey-Saint-Denis and Robert Groffier in Bonnes-Mares; Anne Gros, Michel Gros, Hudelot-Noëllat, Domaine François Lamarche and Michel Noëllat in Vosne; Robert Chevillon in Nuits-Saint-Georges, among nearly forty domaines.
