White Meursault, village and premier cru: Chardonnay from Charmes, Genevrières, Perrières, Les Gouttes d'Or and the village lieux-dits.
Meursault is one of the three main white-wine villages of the Côte de Beaune, with Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Its Chardonnay is richer and more textured than that of its two neighbours, with orchard fruit, hazelnut, a buttery breadth from barrel fermentation and a firm mineral line beneath. The commune has no grand cru, but its premiers crus are among the best-known white sites of Burgundy.
Les Perrières, at the Puligny end of the hillside, on stony ground that gives the climat its name, is the most mineral. Les Genevrières is finer and more floral; Les Charmes broader and rounder; Les Gouttes d'Or and Les Cras complete the premiers crus. At village level, named lieux-dits such as Les Narvaux, Les Tessons, Les Tillets, Les Clous and Clos du Pré de Manche each have their own register.
Compare one grower across village and premier cru: Ballot-Millot offers Meursault, Les Narvaux, Genevrières and Perrières. Our cellar notes give 4 to 12 years for village wines and 8 to 18 years for premiers crus. Serve between 12 and 14 °C. Meursault suits fish in butter sauce, lobster, poultry with mushrooms and Comté.
Ballot-Millot, whose family has held vines in the village since 1630, run by Charles Ballot since 2000; Pierre Morey; Dominique Lafon; Fabien Coche, who succeeded his father Alain at the former Coche-Bizouard; Pernot-Belicard; Henri Germain et Fils; Jean-Michel Gaunoux; Philippe Chavy; Philippe Colin; Prunier-Damy; and Alain Gras, from Saint-Romain.
Red Meursault, a rarity, appears in our Côte de Beaune red collection.
