What defines a red grand cru

A grand cru is a single vineyard classified at the top of the Burgundy hierarchy and entitled to its own appellation; the label carries the vineyard name alone. Of the red grands crus, all but Corton lie in the Côte de Nuits, on the mid-slope where limestone, marl and drainage come together best. They are Pinot Noir, and each has a recognisable character.

The vineyards we hold

In Gevrey-Chambertin: Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-, Charmes-, Latricières-, Mazis-, Mazoyères- and Ruchottes-Chambertin, the most structured of the group. In Morey-Saint-Denis: Clos Saint-Denis. In Chambolle-Musigny: Musigny and Bonnes-Mares, the first fine and fragrant, the second firmer. In Vougeot: Clos de Vougeot, where many growers each hold a parcel, so the wines differ by producer. In Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Échezeaux: Échezeaux, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and La Grande Rue, combining depth and perfume. In the Côte de Beaune: Corton.

How to choose and when to open

The grower matters as much as the vineyard: compare Clos de Vougeot from Hudelot-Noëllat, Michel Gros, Domaine de la Vougeraie and Jean-Jacques Confuron to see how far one vineyard can vary. Our cellar notes give 12 to 30 years of ageing for most of these wines. Open them young only after a long decant; at maturity, decant briefly for the sediment. Serve at 16 to 18 °C, with game, roast beef or mature cheeses.

The growers we hold

Pierre Damoy, Drouhin-Laroze, Domaine Tortochot, Arnaud Mortet and Bruno Clair in the Chambertin vineyards; Robert Groffier, Domaine Bart and Denis Mortet in Bonnes-Mares; Domaine Louis Jadot in Musigny; Anne Gros, Michel Gros, Domaine François Lamarche and Hudelot-Noëllat in Vosne and Vougeot. Quantities at this level are small and often single-bottle.
