What defines white Chassagne-Montrachet

Chassagne-Montrachet is the southernmost of the three main white-wine villages of the Côte de Beaune, after Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. It shares the grands crus Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet with Puligny, and its own premiers crus give whites that are broader than Puligny, with orchard fruit, citrus and a chalky finish. The grands crus are listed separately in our white grand cru collection.

The premiers crus

The commune's premiers crus differ by soil and height. En Remilly lies on the upper slope at the northern edge of the commune, on the boundary with Saint-Aubin and Puligny-Montrachet. Les Chaumées and Clos Saint-Jean are on the slope above the village in the north, with Les Vergers just below Les Chaumées. Les Caillerets lies high on the slope beside En Virondot, and Les Grandes Ruchottes is a small parcel on thin limestone high on the slope. Morgeot, the largest, spreads across the southern sector, where deeper, clay-rich soils give the fullest whites of the village.

How to choose and when to open

Compare one grower across several climats: Bruno Colin offers En Remilly, La Maltroie, Les Chaumées, Les Chenevottes, Les Vergers and Morgeot. Our cellar notes give 5 to 12 years for village whites and 6 to 18 years for premiers crus. Serve between 12 and 14 °C. These wines suit fish in butter sauce, scallops, poultry and Comté.

The growers we hold

The Colin family, Bruno, Philippe, Simon and Joseph, from Chassagne itself; Marc Morey, with Les Caillerets, En Virondot, Les Vergers and Morgeot; Bachelet-Ramonet; Fontaine-Gagnard; Alex Moreau, whose family has grown vines in the village since 1809; Ballot-Millot and Sylvain Langoureau.
